Panel 1

Inuyasha kneels on the ground, eyes glazed in shock, as the huntsman stabs him through the chest.

Panel 2

As the huntsman pushes the dagger through Inuyasha’s chest and out the back, blood spurting, Inuyasha looks down at the dagger hilt in shock.

Inuyasha: You . . . stabbed me! You ran me through! You stabbed me!

Panel 3

Close-up of the huntsman holding the bloody dagger before his face. He is shocked and incredulous.

Huntsman: What? How . . . how can you . . .

Panel 4

Inuyasha angrily looks down at his chest wound, which is bleeding profusely. His hands are covered with dripping blood.

Inuyasha: Look what you did! You stabbed right through me!

Panel 5

The huntsman, looking frightened, wields his dagger in one hand while holding Inuyasha with the other. Inuyasha reaches toward him with his claws.

Inuyasha: You’re trying to kill me!

Huntsman: Monster! Get back!

Panel 1

Inuyasha, kneeling, fights off the huntsman, who has one hand on Inuyasha’s hair and is dropping the dagger from the other. Blood is soaking Inuyasha’s hair and his folded-down kimono, and there are patches of blood on the huntsman’s kimono where the boy has tried to push him away.

Inuyasha: I’m no monster! Get away from me!

Huntsman: Gods! You’re stronger than a man! Unnatural! Beast!

Panel 2

The huntsman pulls his sword with his right hand, while his left grasps Inuyasha’s hair. Inuyasha is trying to pull away the hand at his head, while with the other hand he sinks his claws into the huntsman’s arm. Both are splattered with blood from Inuyasha’s spurting wounds.,

Huntsman: Those claws . . . tearing into my arm! Beast! I’ll cut your head off!

Inuyasha: Let go! Let go!

Panel 3

Inuyasha has wrapped his arms around the huntsman’s leg and is biting the man’s thigh. The huntsman has pulled his sword.

Huntsman: It’s biting me! Beast, I’ll kill you!

Panel 4

The huntsman holds Inuyasha’s head in one hand, while he brings the sword into position with the other. Inuyasha’s hands flail, trying to fend off the sword. The huntsman’s shirt and sleeve are covered with Inuyasha’s bloody handprints.

Huntsman: Now you die, Inuyasha!

Inuyasha: No! No! Let me go!

Panel 1

The huntsman is now on the ground beside Inuyasha. His sword stabs into Inuyasha’s ribs, as Inuyasha fends him off with one hand and claws at his face with the other.

Huntsman: Aaaah!

Inuyasha: Aaaah!

Huntsman: Aieee!

A blood-covered Inuyasha stares dumbfounded at the eyeball in his hand.

Panel 5

The huntsman lies on the ground. The blood-drenched Inuyasha sits on top of him, with the eyeball in his right hand. With the left, he props open the huntsman’s right eye.

Inuyasha: Open your eye, Huntsman! I want you to see the gift I give you! Your own eye—and your life!

Panel 6

Inuyasha: Take your eye back to my uncle! Tell him he has dishonored his agreement with the house of Inutaisho! Tell him—Inuyasha is now the enemy of the Houjou clan! Tell him Inuyasha swears to hunt down his household to the last man—and destroy the Houjou! This I vow!

The woman looks behind her for help, as the bloodied huntsman lies flat, head up.

Woman: Help! Somebody! A doctor!

Huntsman: A doctor will not help. I’m done for. Warn the master . . . Inuyasha has sworn to destroy this house . . .

Panel 7

Closer-in view of the huntsman, now looking weaker, speaking to the woman who listens seriously.

Huntsman: Give my love . . . to my wife and son . . . tell them . . . they must serve . . . my lord . . . promise him . . . my heirs will . . . forever protect . . . the Houjou clan . . . against the curse of Inuyasha . . . that is our vow . . .

Panel 8

A young man stands before the two. The woman is on her knees next to the huntsman, who lies dead on the ground.

Young man: Who called for help here?

Woman: Quickly—run to the master and tell him . . . The beast Inuyasha has murdered Higurashi!

A teenaged boy is kneeling on the ground repairing the rear wheel of the bicycle. He is watched by a small boy with relatively light hair, dressed in sweatshirt jacket, sweat pants, and sneakers with Velcro fasteners. This little boy is four-year-old Houjou Inuyasha ("Koinu"), the younger version of our bishounen anthropologist as well as the earnest Houjou-kun.

Koinu: Whatcha doing, Taro-kun?

Taro: Hey, Koinu-chan.

Koinu: Are you fixing your bike?

Taro: Yep, fixing my bike.

Koinu: Can I watch?

Taro: Yep.

Koinu: Can I have a ride when you’re done?

Taro: Umm . . . maybe.
